Sanguine & Charcoal Portraits

I love both sanguine portraits and charcoal portraits, I think there is something very expressive drawing a face in charcoal, maybe because of the simplicity of the black and white. Then there is the poetry of sanguine that creates a beautiful soft effect, with the loveliest earthy reds against the cream paper.

Here below is a charcoal portrait of Polly who is 20 years old.

These are four sanguine portraits on heavyweight Arches cream paper (30cm x 40cm (A4) just a little bigger) of four siblings commissioned for a special present. All with lovely faces to draw. When I use sanguine I like to also combine the red with graphite pencil, this gives the colour some depth as I find the colour can become too saturated. I have also brush-washed over large areas with water and sanguine. It is a lovely generous medium and great fun to work with.

Willow, sanguine. 30cm x 40cm
Ned, sanguine. 30cm x 40cm
Monty, sanguine. 30cm x 40cm
Tiggy, sanguine. 30cm x 40cm

The sanguine comes from the art shop Zecchi in Florence, Italy. It has a selection of quality art materials to feast your eyes upon and the sanguine is bought in rock form. No fancy pencils here just a big prehistoric rock of iron ore! At the end of this post I have made a short video of the process from my cave-man sanguine rock to ready to use bespoke pointy pencil for these detailed portrait drawings.

Below are the drawings side by side.

COMMISSION A PAINTING

A brief video on how I made my sanguine drawing sticks.

I made this video starting from the block of red oxide which I ground on a heavy piece of glass using a glass muller, once it was ground into a powder which took about five minutes, I gradually added water until it resembled a thick paste that could be easily rolled into pencil thick sticks that fit inside my charcoal holder.

I made my sticks a little too thin dor my charcoal holder so I had to wrap a piece of paper towel around the stick so it would hold well in the holder.

I sharpened the sanguine sticks firstly using a sharp knife to get the pencil shape, and then perfected the point with sandpaper. The sanguine is quite brittle so I had to treat it carefully but I liked its colour and softness as a result.

Recent Still Life paintings, 2024/2025.

Here are a handful of still life paintings that I really enjoyed painting last year. They are experiments of colour painted from objects found in the dark corners of my studio! I had fun enhancing the chromatics and big shapes while thinking less of reality.  To be continued…

Rivers and Trees

Trees and rivers are my inspiration here, they make up for buildings and the roads in towns. We are in Ligura at 370mt above sea level surrounded by chestnut trees, oak, walnut, hazelnut, acacia, pines and many more.  Most of the trees I guess are about 40 years old, many grown up from long forgotton terraces that were cultivated when the valleys were more densely populated with people. This is an old nut tree, one of the survivors because it will always feed you!

Il Vecchio Noce. Oil on panel, 20cm x 30cm.

Just around the corner the river runs wild in heavy rain. The roaring of the water is exciting after a year of dry weather. I did this painting from a window looking down onto the river as it rained, it was luxury plein air painting with all the comforts of heat and a dry palette without those annoying raindrops that accumulate onto the brushes and make the colours feel as if you are painting with vaseline!

Autumn.

Here are a couple of paintings just before we move into winter!

Paths and a Patch.

Here are some paintings of where I live in Liguria, Italy.  They were all done in Spring and from life hence the spring greens.

The Way to Santa Maria. 60cm x 50cm, oil on panel.

There is a man in Santa Maria, this small hamlet above who once gave us some delicious onion sets from seeds that he has been using from the past fifty years, and before.  They are the sweetest onions to be eaten raw in salads or stuffed.  Not many people around here buy seeds but have been reseeding from the existing plant.  So they say the tomatoes that are easily diseased are always the seeds bought from the mass producers in the shops!

This road takes you to another nearby village called Sasseta. Thirty years ago there was only a mule track but times have changed and there is now a road which even more bumpy than the mule track.

Wisteria before Bloom. 20cm x 30cm, oil on wood.

There is something I find a bit overwhelming when painting a Wisteria tree when it is in full bloom so here is a little sketch of it about to come into flower.

Ciao for now and just to keep up to date I will be posting some paintings from this summer soon!

Lunchtime.

Here are a few paintings of what wasn’t eaten…

…except in this painting so far most has been eaten, it is our polytunnel during the winter months – as long as salad is popular no one will starve!
